Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins closed out the calendar year with a 2-0 shutout of the Hershey Bears on Wednesday at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. Penguins goalie Jeff Zatkoff made 24 saves to collect his third shutout of the season and his second over his last three starts.
The Penguins broke a scoreless tie in the final minute of the second period on their fourth power play of the game. Conor Sheary tapped a faceoff win back to the blueline for Brian Dumoulin, who skated across the blueline before sending a wrist shot toward the net that was tipped in by Tom Kostopoulos with 28.5 seconds left until the intermission.
Early in the third period, Hershey goaltender Philipp Gruabauer kept it a one-goal deficit with a pad save in tight on Sheary, but would exit the contest soon thereafter with a lower-body injury and back-up Pheonix Copley would enter the contest for the Bears.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton maintained its 1-0 edge with two penalty kills in the final frame before putting the game out of the reach with 48 seconds remaining in regulation. As the Bears' Tim Kennedy circled in front of his net with the puck, Carter Rowney knocked it loose into the slot, where Dominik Uher beat Copley point blank for his sixth goal of the season.
With the win, Zatkoff raised his record to 11-6-1 on the season. Grubauer suffered the loss with 18 saves on 19 shots over 43:33 of play. Copley turned aside 6-of-7 in relief. The Penguins were 1-for-6 on the power play and a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
The victory for the Penguins was their third straight versus Hershey and extends their lead for the top spot in the East Division to four points over the second-place Bears.
The first Eyewitness News Fan Friday will take place on Friday, Jan. 2 when Wilkes-Barre/Scranton faces the Binghamton Senators. Fans have a chance to purchase lower-bowl end zone seats for just $14 and the first 2,500 in attendance will receive a 2014-15 Pittsburgh Penguins Yearbook.
