Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins' fans and defenseman Joey Mormina helped raise $425.81 for the American Cancer Society during home games Friday and Saturday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Mormina recruited a few of his Penguins teammates to help raise awareness about prostate cancer prevention and treatment. Fans were able to place donations in buckets featuring the names of Penguins players - Brian Strait, Zach Sill, Colin McDonald, Ryan Craig and Eric Tangradi. Having raised the most funds over the weekend, Zach Sill pledged to grow a mustache for the entire month of November.
The contest was the brainchild of Mormina as a fun way to help spread the word about a decidedly unfunny condition. Mormina's father-in-law - Nels Palm - is currently battling the disease. The Penguins will continue to collect donations through the end of November at all home games and their team store at the Ice Rink at Coal Street
Prostate cancer will affect one in six men during their lifetimes, and is the second most common form of cancer among men, trailing only skin cancer. Approximately 240,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.
All money raised will be donated to the American Cancer Society, whose Man to Man program helps men cope with prostate cancer by offering community-based education and support for patients and their family members.
