Penalty Trouble Costs Majors

Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Toronto, Ont. (Thursday, Jan. 4) - The St. Michael's Majors found themselves in the penalty box early and often against the visiting Kitchener Rangers this evening, and it ended up costing them. The Rangers notched three power-play goals and skated off with a 5-2 victory. As a result, the Majors record slips to 14-23-1-1 on the year.

Kitchener's Victor Oreskovich got the visitors on the board only 1:50 into the game when he connected off of a Peter Tsimikalis feed. Justin Donati tied it up for St. Mike's at 7:21 when he snuck home a shorthanded chance after receiving a Matt Caria pass. However, Kitchener received power-play goals from Kevin Henderson and Oreskovich at 7:57 and 13:22 to pull ahead 3-1. The assists were credited to Steven Tarasuk, Matt Pepe and Matt Halischuk.

Caria got the Majors to within a goal when he tipped home a power-play shot, with the assists going to Donati and Rob Kwiet, with 4 seconds left in the opening frame. Unfortunately, St. Mike's couldn't puncture the tight Rangers defence for the remainder of the outing. Henderson and Yves Bastien rounded out the scoring for the visitors, at 2:38 of the 2nd period (power-play) and 13:40 of the 3rd, respectively. The final helpers were snagged by Halischuk, Tsimikalis, Matthew Martello and Brian Soso.

Majors netminder Wayne Savage provided some brilliant stops while the club was shorthanded, but was forced to settle for the loss after allowing all five goals on 40 shots. John Murray, in turn, had 22 saves for the Rangers. The game's three stars were Halischuk (1st), Oreskovich (2nd) and Savage (3rd).

The Majors visit the Guelph Storm for a 7:30 p.m. puck drop tomorrow evening. Then, they return home to entertain Justin DiBenedetto, Ryan Wilson and the Sarnia Sting on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.

Majors tickets are available by contacting the club at 416-651-8228, by calling Ticketmaster at 416-872-5000, online at www.ticketmaster.ca or by stopping by the St. Michael's College School Arena box office within two hours of the puck drop.
