Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The Pensacola Pelicans added another tally to the "win" column tonight, defeating the Sioux Falls Canaries 7-3. Justin Humphries hit a three-run round-tripper, and Kyle Middleton picked up his third win with six more innings without allowing an earned run.
The Pelicans salvaged the three-game series against the Canaries with a win in tonight's final game. Luis Guance got the Pelicans on top first by scoring in the initial inning. He led off with a walk, then moved to second when the newest Pelican, Adam Darby, singled in his first professional at-bat. Both runners stole a base, putting Guance at third and Darby at second for Chase Burch. Burch reached on an error by the shortstop, and Guance scored on the play to make the score 1-0 Pensacola.
The Pelicans added the extra-runs they would need in the third frame, bringing their lead to 4-0. Adam Darby reached on a fielder's choice and then moved to second when Antoin Gray was hit by a pitch. On a wild pitch, both runners moved up one base. When Chase Burch doubled, both runners scored. Marcos Rodriguez followed with a base hit that not only scored Burch, it extended Rodriguez's hitting streak to 16 games.
The Canaries made the game close in the top of the seventh with Ron Hill on his namesake. Ken Lup led off with a single, and Jared Lemieux followed with one of his own. Tim Hutting put a sacrifice bunt down and both runners moved up on the first out of the inning. Joe Anthonsen walked to load the bases. Cory Harris flied out to right, but Lup tagged and scored on the play and Lemieux advanced to third. Lemieux scored on Trevor Lawhorn's single, but an error by the third baseman allowed Anthonsen to reach third. Trying to make it home, Anthonsen collided with Humphries. The catcher took a throw from Rodriguez and held on to record the final out and save the run.
As if to substantiate his play at the plate, Justin Humphries extended the 4-3 Pelicans lead with a three-run shot to left in the bottom of the eighth. Burch singled, Christison reached on a fielder's choice, and Humphries hit the bomb the brought the Pelicans' lead to 7-3. Davis pitched a scoreless top of the ninth to preserve the lead and give the Pelicans the win.
Kyle Middleton went six innings as the Pelicans' starter, giving up four hits, one run (unearned), three walks, and seven strikeouts to extend his lead in the league "K" category. Ron Hill gave up two runs in one inning of work, allowing three hits and walking one. Tyler Wilson surrendered two hits and struck out two batters in a scoreless eighth. Hunter Davis closed it down with two strikeouts and a walk.
The Pelicans will travel to Fort Worth to take on the first-half winner for a three-game set Friday through Sunday. RHP Dane DeValk will face the Cats' RHP Jae Jung on Friday, with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Fans can follow the game live on NewsRadio1620 or online via SportsJuice.com.
