Pelicans, Sports Rubber Match Comes Down to Last Inning

A festive crowd of nearly 2,300 fans came to Pelican Park to watch the Pelicans take on the Shreveport Sports in the rubber-match of this three game series. The game remained close all game with the Sports edging out the Pelicans 4-3 in the 9th inning.

The Sports didn't waste anytime to score the games first run. Ron Fenwick started off the game with a lead off double and would come around to score the games first run off a Chad Gambill single.

Pensacola tied the game in the bottom of the second inning. George Branch walked and later scored when Trino Aguilar hit an infield single. Shreveport pitcher Josh Neitz tried to the field the ball near the first base line, however, was unable to convert and kicked the ball into foul territory, allowing Aguilar to reach base and Branch to score the Pelicans first run.

The score remained tied at one a piece until the bottom of the 5th when the Pelicans scored one run on two hits. Aguilar hit a hard shot one-hopper which Shreveport shortstop Enohel Polanco could not handle. Andrew Salvo then doubled down the right field line passed a diving Justin Humphries at first base. Next batter, Bo Brown hit a deep sacrifice fly ball to right field to score Aguilar.

Pensacola again plated one run in the 6th inning. With the bases loaded, Aguilar was hit by a pitch to score Juan Rocha who reached on a fielders choice earlier in the inning, making the score 3-1.

Shreveport tied the game at three in the seventh thanks to a two out two RBI double from Al Corbeil. Ron Fenwick led off the inning with another double. Pelicans starting pitcher Michael Hyle then struck-out the next two batters and was on the verge of stranding Fenwick at second. After a few wild pitches, Pelicans skipper Kash Beauchamp decided to intentionally walk Sports' slugger Chad Gambill. Al Corbeil then doubled to tie the game.

Once again, the contest between the Sports and Pelicans came down to the 9th inning. Shreveport was able to take the lead in the top half as they used a sacrifice fly from Tommy Bryant to score Todd Self who doubled to begin the inning. In the bottom of the inning, the Pelicans were able to get a runner to second base but were not able to score him. The Sports held on to the one run victory, 4-3.
