Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
Myrtle Beach, S.C. - Blue Rocks pitching tamed the Myrtle Beach Pelicans all night as Wilmington rolled to a 5-0 victory to even the series at one game apiece. The Pelicans were only able to muster four hits against the combination of Blake Wood, Aaron Hartsock and Henry Barrera. The last and only other time that the Pelicans were shutout this season was on May 8th, when the P-Nats defeated the Pelicans 2-0.
The Blue Rocks wasted no time in taking an early lead. Derrick Robinson lead off the game with a soft liner that he beat out for an infield single. Then, Travis Jones committed an error on a groundball by Chris McConnell to put runners at first and second with nobody out. Robinson completed his trip around the bases as Travis Jones threw wide of Ernesto Mejia on a potential double-play ball off the bat of Kurt Mertins.
Wilmington went in search of more in the top of the second. With one out, Jeff Bianchi doubled. He reached third on a wild pitch by Kelvin Villa and then later raced down the third base line to score on a passed ball charged to Tyler Flowers.
In the fourth, the Blue Rocks took a 3-0 lead on a scorched double down the left field line by Josh Johnson that scored Jeff Bianchi.
The Blue Rocks tacked on yet another insurance run in the eighth on a solo home run by Josh Johnson to extend the lead to 4-0. Not that they needed any more runs, the Blue Rocks stretched the lead to 5-0 in the ninth inning.
Wilmington starter Blake Wood, who is the #5 rated prospect in the Royals chain, proved to be too much for the Pelicans to handle. Wood allowed only one hit, while keeping the Pelicans scoreless in six innings to earn his third victory of the season.
Kelvin Villa pitched admirably in his first start of the season but was saddled with the loss. In four innings, he gave up five hits and only one earned run. BB&T Coastal Field witnessed the first appearance for Pelicans newcomer Carlos Rivas. The lanky lefty fought his way out of a couple jams and kept the Blue Rocks scoreless in three innings of work.
The Pelicans play game three of their series against the Blue Rocks on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. RHP Deunte Heath (5-1, 1.84) will take the ball for Pelicans, while the Blue Rocks will counter with RHP Mario Santiago (2-3, 4.75).
