Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC- After last night's 7-6 victory over the Winston-Salem Warthogs the Pelicans find themselves two outfielders and one pitcher lighter on their bus ride to Kinston today. Both, Ardley Jansen and Carlos Duran have been placed on the disabled list and reliever Ricardo Rodriguez has been assigned to extended spring training in Orlando, FL. Myrtle Beach will receive help in the form of OF Steven Doetsch from A-Rome and relief pitcher Jason Richardson from AA-Mississippi. Doetsch and Richardson will join the team in Kinston as the Pelicans prepare for a four-game road series against the first-place K-Tribe.
Last night in the bottom of the 8th inning Jansen was hit in the head by a fastball, delivered by Warthogs pitcher Juan Ovalles. Jansen went down to a knee after being hit and eventually left the game on the back of a golf cart. The extent of the injury is not yet known and is pending an examination from medical staff. Jansen has seen action in 11 games this year, hitting .179 with 0 HR's and 3 RBI.
Duran was originally in the starting line-up for yesterday's game, but was switched out just hours before game time due to appendicitis. He will be placed on the DL while he recovers. Duran was hitting .255 with 0 HR's and 2 RBI before going on the DL.
Doetsch, a 14th round draft pick of the Braves in 2003, was leading the Rome Braves in six offensive categories, batting average (.364), hits (20), triples (2), walks (8), stolen bases (5) and runs scored (13), through the first 13 games this season. Last season Doetsch hit .284 with 9 HR's and 67 RBI for Rome. His 67 RBI led the ballclub and tied for fifth among Braves minor leaguers. In '03 he was named the Gulf Coast Braves Player of the year after batting .320 and cracking the most HR's in the with 8. The outfielder from St. Petersburg, FL will rejoin Josh Burrus and Matt Esquivel, reforming the Rome outfield from just a year ago.
Richardson finished the 2004 season with the Pelicans where he went 0-4 with a 4.45 ERA in 13 relief appearances and one spot start. This season Jason started out in AA-Mississippi where tossed to an 0-1 record and an 8.00 ERA in four relief appearances. Originally drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1999, Jason was picked up by the Braves on June 6, 2004. He is 24-22 with a 3.96 ERA over 52 starts and a total of 138 appearances on the hill.
The Pelicans hit the road for a four-game series at Kinston tonight. Tonight's game can be heard on ESPN Radio 93.9 FM, 93.7 FM and 1050 AM "The Team" at 6:45 pm.
