Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

- LHP Miguel De Los Santos (5-3, 3.88) at LHP Matt Wickswat (5-5, 4.29) -

MARCH OF THE PAIN-GUINS: With a hit-by-pitch in Friday night's opener at Winston-Salem, Pelicans outfielder Jared Prince continues his charge to Carolina League history. Last year, Winston-Salem first baseman/DH Seth Loman obliterated a 22-year-old league record by getting plunked by 30 pitches over the course of his season, passing the mark of 24 established by former Winston-Salem Spirit Rusty Crockett in 1988. After being hit just three times in the first two months of the season, Prince passed Crockett's number in early August at Kinston with his 25th HBP of the year and 22nd since the start of June. Friday night's plunking pushed Prince to 29, one shy of Loman's mark. The Kingston, Washington native and Washington State University product's collegiate coaching staff used to pull players who avoided pitches, thus learning his black-and-blue skill set in the Pac-10 Conference. He's got the bruises to show for it, but in toughing it out, Prince has climbed atop the Carolina League in on base percentage, reaching at a .373 clip.

SEPARATION SATURDAY: With under a week and a half to go in the 2011 regular season, the Carolina League Southern Division second-half title race looks like it'll come down to the final days. It doesn't, however, look like it will involve the Pelicans. Friday's doubleheader sweep by the Winston-Salem Dash wasn't necessarily a total death blow, but it certainly pushed the Pelicans to the brink with ther magic number to division title elimination cut in half from eight to four with Friday's two losses to the front-running Dash. With their victories, the Dash also upped their division advantage to a game and a half over idle Kinston, which saw its Friday tilt with Lynchburg rained out due to the effects of Hurricane Irene. Despite Kinston not playing a game, the Indians saw their own elimination number dip to nine with Winston-Salem's victories. The Pelicans, of course, do not need the division crown to earn postseason play. Myrtle Beach clinched the right to play for the Mills Cup with the first-half Southern Division title.

OH, RIGHT, THIS AGAIN: The Pelicans' anemic offensive showing Friday night was an all-too-common refrain to Myrtle Beach in the second half of 2011. After leading the Carolina League in offense for the bulk of the season and rolling to 40 wins in 69 games of their division title-winning first half, the Pelicans took their seventh shutout defeat of the second half in the opening game of their four-game series at Winston-Salem. They followed that performance with their sixth loss in which they've been held to one run in the half. The Pelicans have scored two or fewer runs in 20 of 61 second-half games.
