Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP Jake Odorizzi (4-0, 2.28) at RHP Wilfredo Boscan (0-2, 6.75)
TAKING COMMAND: Last night's win over the Red Sox gave the Pelicans a two-game advantage over Salem in the Southern Division. The Birds are now 27-19, while Salem trails at 24-20. The Red Sox play a home doubleheader against Frederick today while Myrtle Beach hosts Northern-Division leading Wilmington. The Pelicans held their largest lead in the South last Friday when they were three games up on the Red Sox before being swept by the Blue Rocks.
ROBBIE MOVES ON UP: Pelicans lefty Robbie Erlin has had an amazing beginning to his 2011 season over his first nine starts. The Rangers rewarded Robbie after last night's game by promoting him to Double-A Frisco. Erlin is currently leads the Carolina League in strikeouts (62), WHIP (0.55), opponent batting average (.132) and fewest baserunners per nine innings (5.32). The Santa Cruzan is fourth in the circuit in ERA with a 2.14 mark. Right-hander Justin Grimm has been called up from Hickory to replace Erlin on the roster. Grimm is 2-1 with a 3.40 ERA through nine starts in his first professional season. Grimm was a fifth-round pick in last year's draft out of the University of Georgia.
A NEW HIGH WATER MARK: The Pelicans have vastly improved this season as a Rangers affiliate. Last night's win was the Pelicans 27th of 2011. Amazingly, they have already passed last season's total for the entire first half. The Birds struggled early last year with a first-half mark of 26-44. 2009 was not a good season either, as the Pelicans started 25-42 on their way to a 53-84 record. From 2003-2010, the Pelicans had an overall record of 523-589 (.470), all while they were an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
