Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
RHP Chris Balcom-Miller (3-1, 2.10) at LHP Robbie Ross (5-1, 2.47)
BACK IN FIRST: Last night's win over the Red Sox gave the Pelicans sole possession of first place in the South. They were tied with Salem after Tuesday's 8-1 loss, in fact Salem was percentage points ahead by virtue of playing two fewer games than the Pelicans. With the win however, the Birds are back on top and can take a two-game advantage with a win tonight in the rubber game.
MUST LOVE WIENER WEDNESDAYS: Ryan Strausborger had the big hit last night, a first-inning two-run homer that gave the Pelicans a quick lead they would not relinquish. It was Ryan's fifth long ball of the year, all at BB&T Coastal Field. Not only have they all been at home but they've all come on a night the Birds are having their dollar hot dog promotion, Wiener Wednesday. The outfielder is now tied with teammate Zach Zaneski and five other players for tenth in the league in round-trippers.
RACKING UP THE K'S: Barret Loux ran up five strikeouts in last night's victory, giving him 52 on the season. With Robbie Erlin (62) and Joe Wieland (61) ranking 1-2 in the circuit, the Pelicans now have three of the six best strikeout pitchers in the Carolina League. Wieland, Erlin and Loux rank first, third and sixth respectively in strikeouts per nine innings. With 390 whiffs in 390 innings the pitching staff as a whole leads the league in K's and K/9 IP ratio.
THE BEST DEFENSE IS A...GOOD DEFENSE: The Pelicans have made only 34 errors in 45 games, the fewest in the Carolina League. They also lead the loop in fielding percentage with a .979 mark.
