Myrtle Beach Pelicans (23-13) vs. Potomac Nationals (22-13)
Tuesday, May 13 -- 5:30 PM (DH)
Pfitzner Stadium -- Woodbridge, VA
Game #37-38, Road Game #22-23
TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans are coming off their first series sweep of the season after taking all three games from the Wilmington Blue Rocks at Frawley Stadium. The birds are also on a season-high four-game winning streak and have claimed eight consecutive series dating back to a series loss to Winston-Salem at BB&T Coastal Field (4/14-4/16). That string includes taking two-of-three from Potomac on the Grand Strand prior to embarking on their current week-long road trip. The P-Nats swept Myrtle Beach in a three-game series at Pfitzner Stadium 4/8-4/10. Following their first rain-out of the season, the Pelicans will be playing their first doubleheader of the season.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: In a paring of righties in game one, the Pelicans will send Deunte Heath to the hill in game one against Potomac's Jhonny Nunez. Lefty Kelvin Villa wil make a spot-start in game two against right-hander Terrence Engles.
Heath: Is coming off his first loss of the season, at the hands of the P-Nats at BB&T Coastal Field. However, he turned in his second longest outing of the year going seven innings, permitting four runs (three earned) on just six hits. He harnessed his control which has plagued him, walking just two while striking out two. His ERA of 2.14 currently places him fifth in the Carolina League despite being tied for second in the loop with 22 walks issued.
Nunez: Will be making his second straight start against the Pelicans, after taking the loss in the series finale at BB&T Coastal Field on Wednesday. Nunez was hit hard in the ballgame, permitting five earned runs on seven hits over just four innings. He fared better in his first start against Myrtle Beach, conceding two runs on seven hits over five innings at Pfitzner Stadium on April 10th in a ballgame the P-Nats won.
Villa: Has made six appearances in relief for the Pelicans since joinging the team from Mississippi (AA) on April 18th. His longest outing of the the season was his last, when he turned in three innings against the P-Nats, allowing a lone run. Villa spent the entire 2007 season with Double-A Mississippi after being selected as a Carolina League All-Star with Myrtle Beach in 2006.
Engles: Will be making just his third start of the year for Potomac, and he has been hit hard in each of his first two. The 22-year old was sent to the showers after two innings in his Carolina League debut against Frederick, allowing seven runs (four earned) on six hits. He didn't fare much better in his second go-around, turning in 4 2/3 innings against Kinston, surrendering four earned runs on five hits.
TOODLES TO TOMMY: During their game two win on Saturday, the Pelicans learned that their ace, right-hander Tommy Hanson, had been promoted to Mississippi (AA). The 21-year old will leave a large void, having posted a 3-1 record in seven starts with an ERA of 0.90 (2nd - CL). At the time of his promotion, the two-time Carolina League Pitcher of the Week had 49 strikeouts, also second in the league. He is scheduled to start Tuesday against the Montgomery Biscuits for the M-Braves.
MAY-HE-A CONTINUED: 1B Ernesto Mejia extended his team-high 13-game hit streak with a single in yesterday's 3-1 win. During the streak, which includes hitting safely in every game in the month of May, Mejia is batting .389 (21-54) with three home runs and 13 RBI.
KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES PART TWO: Though his hit streak was stopped at 11 games in the series opener against Wilmington, 2B Travis has continued his team-best on-base streak to 14 games. During the run, Jones is batting .333 (19-57) with three home runs and 13 RBI. Nine of his 19 hits have gone for extra bases (3 HR, 2 3B, 4 2B).
