Myrtle Beach Pelicans (19-13) vs. Potomac Nationals (20-10)

Wednesday, May 7 -- 10:35 AM

BB&T Coastal Field -- Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Game #33, Home Game #15

TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans will put their streak of six-consecutive series victories on the line this morning as they host the Potomac Nationals in the finale of a three-game set. Today is the final 10:35 AM ballgame of the season for Myrtle Beach. The birds last lost a series against the Frederick Keys (4/11-4/13).

TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: In a match-up of right-handers, Kyle Cofield will make his seventh start of the season for the Pelicans against Jhonny Nunez for Potomac. Cofield also served as the Pelicans starter in their other 10:35 AM ballgame, taking the ball on Wednesday, April 16th against the Winston-Salem Warthogs.

Cofield: Makes his fifth home and second morning start of the season today for Myrtle Beach. The righty will look to rebound after a shaky outing against the Salem Avalanche his last time out. Cofield took the loss against Salem, setting the tone to his start by walking the bases loaded in the first inning. Despite the fact that he got out of that jam, Cofield went on to allow six runs on eight hits over five innings. Just two of the runs were earned, as Cofield walked a season-high five and struck out a season-low one. The righty has been much more effective at BB&T Coastal field this season, posting a 1-2 mark at home with an ERA of 3.86. On the road, Cofield is 0-2, with an ERA nearly two runs higher at 5.67.

The Rainbow City, Alabama native was drafted in the eighth round of the 2005 draft by the Braves. Has made a steady climb to the Advanced-A level; Gulf Coast League (‘05), Appalachian League(‘06), South Atlantic League (‘07) and currently Carolina League (‘08).

Nunez: Has had a rough go of it lately. In his most recent start, the righty lasted just two innings, conceding a pair of runs to the Frederick Keys. The Keys have had the Dominican-born hurlers number, posting six runs on eight hits over four innings the start prior. Nunez will be making his second start of the season against the Pelicans. On April 10th, Nunez turned in five innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while not factoring in the decision.

Nunez was acquired in 2006 by the Nationals in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers that send Marlon Anderson to LA.

ROAD WARRIORS: The Pelicans are currently the only team in the CL with a winning record on the road, having compiled a 11-7 mark thus far. That bodes well for the Southern Division front-runners, who will play six of their next nine games away from the Grand Strand.

MAY-HE-A: So far so good in the month of May for Ernesto Mejia, who has hit safely in the first six games of the month and is riding a season-high nine-game hit streak (.444, 16-36, 3 HR). The first baseman tied the Pelicans franchise record with six RBIs in this past Saturday's 8-4 win. Mejia hit safely in each game of the last road trip and currently has a ten-game road hit streak (.461, 18-39). All four of his home runs have come on the road and during the streak. Mejia was named the Carolina league Player of the Week for the week of April 28th-May 4th.

KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES: Pelicans second baseman has done it all over the last two weeks. When Gorkys Hernandez went on the disabled list (4/23), Manager Rocket Wheeler called upon Jones to be the table setter at the top of the order. He has responded in a big way, currently riding a season-best ten-game hitting streak, in which he is hitting .395 with three home runs. Jones is tied for the team lead in runs scored with 17, first on the team in hits with 31, first in stolen bases with eight and second on the team in RBIs with 20.
