
Pelicans Drop Saturday Contest to Woodpeckers 15-3

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans fell for the first time this week with a 15-3 loss to the Fayetteville Woodpeckers on Saturday night. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Pelicans and was the first loss to the Woodpeckers in 14 games, dating back to last year. Myrtle Beach dropped to a 61-45 record and 22-19 in the second half. The Woodpeckers improved 46-61 and 16-25 in the second half.
It was a rough night for the Birds' pitching staff as they walked 12 batters and hit five. Starter Drew Gray took the loss (0-3) after getting the first two outs of the first inning. Gray allowed three earned runs off five walks with one strikeout. The 15 runs allowed were the most in a game this season by Myrtle Beach.
The bats fell quiet with just five hits and three runs to show for it in the Birds' first loss of the week. Parker Chavers (1-3, 2 RBI, BB) brought home two on a single in the first inning to cut the lead to one. Cristian Hernandez (1-2, RBI, 2 BB) hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh and reached base three times. The Pelicans drew eight walks, but struck out 14 times.
Fayetteville put up their second-most runs in a game this season off 12 hits and 12 walks. Jackson Loftin (3-4, HR, 2B, 6 RBI, 2 BB) came a triply shy of the cycle with a six-RBI performance. Loftin had an RBI walk in the first, a grand slam in the fourth, and an RBI single in the seventh. Dauri Lorenzo (3-6, 3 RBI) drove in three. Leosdany Molina (2-6, HR, RBI) and Garret Guillemette (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, BB) both hit home runs in the victory.
After a shaky start from Tyler Guilfoil with seven walks and two earned runs, Jose Fleury (3-3) tossed five relief innings with a season-high 10 strikeouts to earn the win with just one earned run allowed. Fleury walked just one and gave up four hits in his outing.
The series concludes on Sunday night at 6:35 p.m.
