ZEBULON, NC: The Delmarva Shorebirds (16-24) lost a back-and-forth game to the Carolina Mudcats (27-13) on Saturday night as they were defeated 6-3 on a walk-off home run by Luke Adams.
Brayan Hernandez gave Delmarva the first lead of the game in the third inning as he demolished a baseball over the wall in right field to make it 1-0 following his solo shot.
With the game still 1-0 in the fifth, the Mudcats tied the game on an RBI single by Luis Lara to score Kay-Lan Nicasia. Carolina would then load the bases with one out, but Juan De Los Santos would deliver a timely double-play ball off the bat of Jose Sibrian to end the inning, keeping the game even at one.
Runs would be tough to come by for both teams entering the eighth inning as the score remained deadlocked at one, but Delmarva developed a two-out rally in the eighth by loading the bases with two hits and a walk. They would score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch as Brayan Hernandez scored, making it 2-1 Shorebirds.
But that would begin a back-and-forth game as the Mudcats rallied to even the game on a sacrifice fly by Tayden Hall, followed by a go-ahead RBI single by Jesus Chirinos to put the Shorebirds behind for the first time at 3-2 at the end of the eighth.
Delmarva, however, would battle down to their final breath as Adam Crampton singled down the left field line with two outs and two strikes on him to score the tying run in Tavian Josenberger, but the Mudcats would cut down the go-ahead run in Jalen Vasquez at home to keep the game tied at three.
The Mudcats would then deliver heartbreak to the Shorebirds as they walked off Delmarva in the bottom of the ninth on a no-doubt, three-run homer by Luke Adams, giving Carolina a 6-3 win on Saturday night.
Yerlin Rodriguez (1-0) earned the win in relief with Randy Berigüete (0-2) taking the loss for the Shorebirds.
Delmarva will look to finish the six-game series on a strong note on Sunday afternoon as Alfred Vega gets the start for the Shorebirds against Will Childers for the Mudcats with first pitch at 1:00 p.m.
