Pelicans Blasted by Keys 13-6

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (41-30, 1-1), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, surrendered three home runs Saturday and dropped a 13-6 decision against the Frederick Keys at Harry Grove Stadium. The Pelicans and Keys will play the rubber match Sunday night.

Left-hander Tim Berry (5-4) earned the win for the Keys, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits over six innings. The left-hander walked two and struck out two.

Victor Payano walked the bases loaded and surrendered four runs on just one hit in the first inning. Allan de San Miguel punctuated the rally with a two-run home run. Payano (5-4) took the loss, departing after the opening frame.

The Keys continued to open things up, sending 10 men to the plate and plating five runs against Joe Van Meter in the third inning. Michael Ohlman fueled the rally with a two-run home run. Van Meter worked two innings and allowed five earned runs on five hits.

With the Pelicans trailing 9-0, Patrick Cantwell added a two-run single for the Pelicans in the fifth inning. Sammie Starr supplied a three-run home run for the Keys in the seventh inning.

Trailing by 11 entering the ninth inning, the Pelicans struck for four runs, three of which were unearned against Matt Price. Rougned Odor had an RBI single and Edwin Garcia had an RBI ground out. Joe Maloney added a bases loaded walk. Garcia and Odor each finished with two hits apiece.

Taylor Dennis went a season-long 3.2 innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits.

The Pelicans wrap up a three-game series Sunday against the Keys at Harry Grove Stadium. All-star right-hander Luke Jackson (6-4, 2.18) will be opposed by Brady Wager (0-1, 11.42). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m. on AM 1050 and FM 101.9 - Fox Sports in Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans return home on Friday, June 28, to take on the Lynchburg Hillcats, the Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers.
