Blough, Richmond Shine in Shutout Victory
June 22, 2013 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Winston-Salem Dash News Release
LYNCHBURG, Va. (June 22, 2013) - Behind Bryan Blough's eight scoreless innings and Josh Richmond's multi-homer effort, the Dash earned their first win of the second half by a score of 5-0 over the Lynchburg Hillcats on Saturday evening at Lynchburg City Stadium.
Blough (6-4) lasted a career-high eight innings and faced just three more than the minimum. He surrendered just three hits and one walk while striking out five Hillcats. The outing pushes the right-hander's personal winning streak to five games, which is also a career-high.
Cody Winiarski came on in the ninth frame and retired Lynchburg in order, giving the Dash (1-1, 39-33) their ninth shutout of the campaign. Those nine shutouts pace the Carolina League and ties Winston-Salem with the St. Lucie Mets for the most in High-A baseball.
The Dash did not waste any time in getting on the scoreboard. Joey DeMichele started the contest by drawing a four-pitch walk from Hillcats starter Jarrett Miller (5-4). One batter later, Adam Heisler knocked his team-leading fourth triple to plate the contest's first run. Kevan Smith brought Heisler home with an RBI groundout to double Winston's first-inning advantage.
In frame number two, Winston-Salem would add a third tally. Richmond clubbed a two-out solo shot to left-center field, his first on the evening.
It would stay that way until the sixth, when the Dash would add another insurance run. With two away, Courtney Hawkins struck out but reached first as Miller's offering was wild and got away from catcher Cory Brownsten. Winston would take advantage of that miscue as Rangel Ravelo doubled Hawkins home.
In the ninth, Richmond would go deep again, this time against Lynchburg reliever John Cornely, for his second homer of the night to wrap up the contest's scoring. It marked Richmond's second career multi-homer game and the fifth by a Winston-Salem hitter in 2013.
The Dash and Hillcats wrap up this three-game series Sunday evening at Lynchburg City Stadium. Winston-Salem will send righty Myles Jaye (3-2, 5.98 ERA) to the hill, while Lynchburg will counter with southpaw Blaine Sims (0-2, 5.00 ERA). Coverage begins on wsdash.com at 5:50 with the Pregame Dash, and first pitch will follow at 6:05.
Winston-Salem's first homestand of the second half begins Monday at 7 p.m. as the Dash open up a four-game series against the Salem Red Sox. For tickets, call the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visit wsdash.com.
