Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
For the 11th time this season, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans pitched a shutout as they took down the Columbia Fireflies 1-0 on Tuesday night. With their 15th win in 19 games against Columbia, the Pelicans improved their record to 67-36 and 20-17 in the second half. The Fireflies dropped to 36-66 and an 18-18 second-half record.
On a quiet night for the Pelicans' bats, Ethan Hearn (3-3, 2B) collected three of the five hits with a double. James Triantos (0-3, RBI, BB) brought home the only run with his bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth. Myrtle Beach stranded nine runners and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
The pitching staff walked only three and struck out 10 with Gregori Montano (1-0) taking the win by pitching the final 1 1/3 innings with no hits or runs allowed. Starter Luke Little struck out five through hit 3 2/3 frames and Jose Miguel Gonzalez followed with four shutout innings in relief with five strikeouts to one walk and four hits allowed.
Despite outhitting the Pelicans, the Fireflies went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10. Erick Pena (2-4) and Carter Jensen (2-4, 2B) both posted multi-hit performances in the losing effort.
Luinder Avila tossed seven shutout innings in his start with three hits and two walks allowed to two strikeouts. The loss went to Oscar Rayo (1-1) with the earned run in his one inning of work.
Both teams struggled to get going, but the Fireflies threatened first in the top of the fourth. With runners on first and second with two outs, Gonzalez came out of the bullpen and struck out Javier Vaz to end the inning.
The first two batters reached for Columbia on a double by Jensen and a throwing error by Triantos that allowed David Hollie to reach in the top of the sixth. Pena came up with one out and lined a single to right field. Jensen came home but was thrown out by Jacob Wetzel in right to catcher Hearn, who put on the tag for the second out. Vaz followed with a groundout to end the inning.
The offense came together for the Pelicans in the bottom of the eighth. Josue Huma hit a one-out single and Ezequiel Pagan followed with a double. With runners on second and third and the infield playing shallow, Moises Ballesteros grounded to Vaz at second base. Vaz threw home to catcher Kyle Hayes, who put the tag on home for the second out. Wetzel was hit by a pitch in the next plate appearance to load the bases. Triantos came up and walked on four pitches to bring in Pagan and put the Birds up 1-0.
Columbia left the tying run in scoring position in the top of the ninth. After Montano got the first two outs, Lizandro Rodriguez worked a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Jean Ramirez followed with a groundout back to Montano to end the game.
The Pelicans and Fireflies will square off for game two of the series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
