Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- The injuries just keep coming and the Pelicans keep on making moves to fight through the bruises, the dings, and the fractures. Today the Pelicans were forced to place RF Matt Esquivel on the disabled list with a banged up shoulder. The bad news comes just one day after Myrtle Beach lost SS Diory Hernandez to the DL after suffering a fractured hand. To fill the empty roster spots the Birds will receive help in the form of two pitchers. The man that led the Pelicans in saves just a year ago, RHP Glenn Tucker, returns to Myrtle Beach after starting the '05 campaign in AA-Mississippi. Another reliever, RHP Zach Schreiber, will join the Pelicans bullpen from A-Rome. To date six Pelicans have been placed on the DL through the first month and a half of the '05 campaign.

Losing Esquivel takes the 3rd highest batting average on the team out of the everyday line-up. The big Texan goes on the DL after hitting .292 with four homeruns and 23 RBI through 35 games. Esquivel's four blasts are good enough for second most on the team behind LF Josh Burrus and C Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who have each knocked out five round trippers in '05. Esquivel has also knocked in the second most runs on the team with 23 total, just two off the pace of the team leader, Burrus.

Tucker comes back to the Beach after tossing to a 1-2 record and a 2.16 ERA in 15 relief appearances with the Mississippi Braves this season. "Tuck" leaves the M-Braves after earning the most saves on the team with four. In '04 Glenn led the Pelicans with 21 saves and recorded a 3-1 mark with a solid 1.64 ERA. For his efforts last season Tucker named "Best Defensive Player" on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans by his peers. Tucker also won the 2004 "Community Service" award for the Pelicans, thanks to his outstanding work within the Myrtle Beach community.

Schreiber, a former Duke Blue Devil, joins the Pelicans after going 1-1 with a 2.76 ERA in 14 appearances out of the pen in Rome. Schreiber has given up just five earned runs in 16.1 innings of work this season. The 16th round draft pick of the Braves in the '04 draft went 1-6 and logged a 5.70 ERA last season with the DSL Braves.

Both, Tucker and Schreiber, will join the Pelicans tonight in Wilmington, Delaware as the Birds prepare for the start of a three-game road series against the Blue Rocks.

Tonight the Pelicans take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks in game one of a three-game road series. First pitch is set for 6:30 pm with all of the live play-by-play able to be heard on ESPN Radio 93.9 FM, 93.7 FM and 1050 AM "The Team" or online at www.myrtlebeachpelicans.com. The next Pelicans home game is set for Monday, May 23rd at 7:02 pm when the Birds return to host the Winston-Salem Warthogs, kicking off a six-game homestand.
