Wilmington, DE --- Scott White's two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Wilmington Blue Rocks their first walk-off victory of 2005, an 8-7 win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans before 4,695 fans at Frawley Stadium on Thursday night.
White, who was 0-for-4 entering his final at-bat, lined a 1-2 pitch to right field off Glenn Tucker (0-1) for the game-winner, scoring Bryan Goelz. Goelz had led off the inning with a four-pitch walk.
The victory marked the first time this season that the Blue Rocks had won a game when trailing after seven innings.
After jumping out to a 5-2 lead off Pelicans starter Kelvin Villa, the Blue Rocks would allow the Pelicans to steal that lead in the sixth inning. Wilmington starter Luis Mendoza gave up three runs in the sixth, including a two-run double by Carlos Guzman that tied the game. Jaime Trejo followed with a single to give the Pelicans their first lead of the game.
After Myrtle Beach added an insurance run off Steve Langone (1-0) in the top of the eighth, the Blue Rocks roared back to tie the game on a two-run homer from Mickey Hall, his fifth of the season. Hall finished the game 2-for-3 with a triple, home run, and three runs scored.
After a scoreless top of the ninth from Langone, the stage was set for White's heroics, and the Blue Rocks took the opening game of the series. The two teams meet tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Frawley Stadium. Jose Vaquedano (2-0, 2.41) will throw against lefty Brady Endl (2-3, 2.49) in the second game of the series.
