Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

In the first game after the All-Star break, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans dropped the series-opener to the Carolina Mudcats 5-3 on Friday night. The loss drops the Birds to 47-34 and 8-8 in the second half, while the Mudcats improved to 41-37 and 8-7 in the second half of the season. Friday's "Circus Night" featured circus acts around the ballpark courtesy of Over the Moon Productions.

Despite scoring just three runs, the Pelicans collected nine hits, led by Ismael Mena (2-4) and Andy Garriola (2-4, RBI). Miguel Pabon (1-3, 2B) provided the only extra-base hit with a double in the eighth inning.

Erian Rodriguez (4-5) took the loss with three earned runs in his 2 2/3 innings off three hits and three walks while striking out four. Starter Grant Kipp lasted just 3 1/3 innings with two earned runs off eight hits and a walk while striking out three.

It was a hit parade for the Mudcats as they racked up 15 hits, the most against the Pelicans this season. Tayden Hall (3-4, BB) and Jadher Areinamo (3-4, RBI, BB) led Carolina with three hits each. Jose Sibrian (2-5, 2B, 2 RBI) brought home two runs on a double in the fifth inning. 13 of the 15 hits were singles for the visitors.

Only three arms were used by the Mudcats as starter Will Rudy (4-2) took the win with two runs, one earned allowed in his six-inning outing. Rudy struck out three and walked just one with six hits. Yerlin Rodriguez escaped the ninth inning with one run allowed to pick up the save.

It was a quick start for both teams as one run scored for both sides in the opening frame. With runners on second and third and two outs for the Mudcats, Kipp walked Luke Adams on a wild pitch as the first run scored.

In the bottom half, Garriola hit a single with two outs to bring home Mena from second to tie the game. Garriola was tagged out trying to stretch his hit to a double to end the inning.

The Pelicans took the lead in the bottom of the second as Rafael Morel brought home Parker Chavers from second on a single up the middle to make it a 2-1 game.

Carolina tied the game with a run in the top half of the fourth. With runners on the corners and one out, Jesus Chirinos hit a hard ground ball that hit off both Kipp and Cristian Hernandez at second base to bring home the tying run.

In a 2-2 game, Carolina scored three to take the lead in the top of the fifth. With runners on first and second, Areinamo hit a single to center that scored the run from second. Mena's throw home from center went wild as the play finished with runners on second and third. Both came in on Sibrian's two-out double to right that extended the lead to 5-2.

The Pelicans were held quiet up until the ninth inning. As Rodriguez came in the game to close it out, Jefferson Rojas and Garriola both hit singles to lead off the inning. Runners would later move to the corners after a force out and Rojas scored from third on a wild pitch. Pedro Ramirez struck out as the winning run with two runners on to end the game.

Myrtle Beach and Carolina continued their series at Pelicans Ballpark with first pitch slated for 6:35 on Saturday night.
