Pelech Named Winner of OHL's Ivan Tennant Memorial Award
April 26, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release
The Ontario Hockey League today announced that Erie Otters defenseman Adam Pelech is the recipient of the Ivan Tennant Memorial Award and the Bobby Smith Trophy.
The second-year defenseman rebounded after an early-season injury and was a steady influence on the blue line, collecting 20 points in 44 games. Pelech was excellent in the classroom as he maintained a 95% average with a full course load at McDowell High School. He is the first player in OHL history to receive both awards in the same season.
Pelech recently guided Canada to a bronze medal at the World Under-18 Championships in the Czech Republic, the country's first medal at the event since 2008. He served as an assistant captain and was named by opposing coaches as one of Canada's top three players at the tournament.
The Ivan Tennant Memorial Award is awarded annually to the top academic high school player in the OHL. Adam's brother Matt, then playing for the Sarnia Sting, was the first player to be presented with the award in 2005.
"It's awesome," Pelech said. "It's an award that my brother won when he was playing in the league so it's cool that I have won it as well. Both academics and on-ice performance go hand in hand and it's great to be recognized for both."
The Bobby Smith Trophy honors the OHL Scholastic Player of the Year who best combines high standards of play and academic excellence. Pelech is the second Erie Otter to win the award, as franchise player Brad Boyes captured the trophy for his work during the 1999-2000 season.
"Adam Pelech shows his leadership by conduct," Otters general manager Sherry Bassin said. "He is truly a leader on the ice and a leader in the classroom. He does it quietly and shows by conduct that goals can be accomplished if you stick with it. We are proud of his accomplishments in the classroom and on the ice. His dedication to being the best is why he will have a long career in the National Hockey League."
