Birmingham Barons News Release

The Barons squandered a 3-2 ninth inning lead Sunday afternoon against the M-Braves, falling by a score of 5-4 in front of 3,462 fans at Regions Field.

The Barons jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double by Dan Black, his league-leading 53rd RBI of the season.

The M-Braves would tie the game at 1-1 in the second on a solo home run by Robby Hefflinger and would take their first lead of the game on an RBI single by Jaime Pedroza against starter Spencer Arroyo.

The Barons would come back to take a 3-2 lead thanks to another RBI single by Black in the sixth and a run scoring double by David Herbek in the seventh.

The Barons were 44-0 on the season when carrying a lead after the seventh inning coming into the game and looked to continue that streak against the M-Braves. However, a leadoff single by Dan Brew set the table for a three-run rally against reliever Salvador Sanchez (1-4, 3.00). Omar Luna followed Brew with a base hit of his own and the Barons elected to load the bases by intentionally walking Jose Martinez. A wild pitch by Sanchez would tie the game at 3-3 but he would recover to strike out the next two batters. However, a two out, two-run single by Jaime Pedroza gave the M-Braves a 5-3 lead.

The Barons would score a run to make it close in the ninth when Dan Wagner's ground ball was mishandled by Barrett Kleinknecht and thrown into the stands behind first base, allowing Marcus Semien to score from second. With the tying run at second base Trayce Thompson grounded out to end the game.

The win went to Pat Egan (4-1, 2.10) who allowed one unearned run over 2.0 hitless innings as the M-Braves improved to 46-43 and 8-11 in the second half. The loss dropped the Barons to 53-36 and 9-10 in the second half.

Arroyo took a no-decision despite a solid start, allowing just two runs on three hits over 7.0 IP.

Marcus Semien finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the losing effort, increasing his league-lead to 69 on the season.

The Barons will look to salvage the final game of the series tomorrow night as RHP Michael Nix (2-1, 3.57) takes the hill against RHP Aaron Northcraft (3-7, 4.15). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
