Jackson Generals News Release

PENSACOLA, Fla. (July 7, 2013) - The 1 hour 33 minute rain delay was not enough to cool off the Generals (9-8, 38-45) Sunday as they won their third straight over Pensacola (9-10, 34-54), 5-4 and clinched their second straight series win. The back-to-back series wins marked the first time this year Jackson has won two series in-a-row. Jackson not only took the series with the win, but also picked up a one game lead in the season series against the Wahoos (5-4). The Generals also overcame a seventh inning deficit for just the second time this year; trailing after seven innings (2-31).

It took both pitchers just one pitch to retire the first hitter they each faced. Despite the first pitch success Blue Wahoos' starter Daniel Renken did not have the same success in the top of the second. Generals' designated hitter, Steven Proscia (1-2, HR, 2 RBI) blasted a solo homer on the first pitch he saw which gave the Generals the early 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, more offensive action was stirring for the Generals. Leon Landry (1-3, 2 R) led off the inning with a walk. Landry advanced after a single by James Jones (2-5). Both runners advanced 90 feet because of a throwing error by Pensacola's right fielder Yorman Rodriguez. A disciplined at-bat for Proscia granted him a walk to load the bases. Ji-Man Choi (1-2, RBI) delivered an RBI single to plate Landry and move each runner another 90 feet. Ramon Morla (0-4) grounded into a fielder's choice to prevent further damage, but the Wahoos only got one out. Generals' catcher John Hicks (0-3, RBI) picked up his 17th RBI with a sacrifice fly to score Proscia. After the half inning, Jackson buffered their lead by adding two and led 3-0.

As the Generals' pitching had been cruising, the 21 inning scoreless streak by the staff ended with a solo homer to center by Rodriguez. After six innings, Jackson led 3-1.

Pensacola surged in the seventh. Thanks to a lead-off single by Matt Kennelly, Ryan LaMarre brought Kennelly in with an RBI single. Another single by Ray Chang put runners on first and second with only one out. The third single in a row loaded the bases for the Blue Wahoos. A passed ball allowed the tying run to score and the other base runners advance a base a piece. A few pitches later, Devin Lohman grounded in a fielder's choice to Gabriel Noriega (1-4, 1B) that was unsuccessful to plate Chang. The run gave the Wahoos the lead, 4-3 into the eighth.

Jackson did respond in the eighth. Second basemen Chris Taylor (2-4, R) led off the inning with a single to left. Landry attempted a sacrifice bunt, but reached safely because of a fielding error by Donald Lutz at first. Jones laid down a perfect bunt single to load the pond. Proscia brought in Taylor in from third with a sacrifice fly to even the score at 4-4. Landry advanced to third on the fly. Choi was intentionally walked to load the bases once again. Unsuccessfully, Morla struck out with the bases full. With three on, two out and Hicks at the dish, a wild pitch plates Landry to retake the lead 5-4.

Even though Andrew Kittredge suffered his first blown save of the season, Generals' reliever Tyler Burgoon (W, 4-2, 1.2,1,0,0,1,2,0) led the Generals out of a jam by grounding Lutz into an inning ending double play and picked up his fourth win of the year.

Carson Smith (S, 10) tossed another shutout final frame to earn back-to-back saves. Wilkin De La Rosa (L, 2-5) picked up the loss for Pensacola as Loek Van Mil (BS, 4) also suffered a blown save on the night.

Tomorrow, the series finale is set for 7 p.m. CST at Pensacola Bayfront Stadium. Generals' righty, Chance Ruffin (4-3, 3.66) will take the hill for Jackson. He will be ooposed by Pensacola's right hander Josh Smith (7-6, 3.47). The game can be heard on 96.5 ESPN Radio, TuneIn Radio App. and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
