Around the Horn: Generals Rally Late to Escape with 5-4 Victory

Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release

A rain delay in excess of ninety minutes pushed the first pitch back considerably, but Mother Nature wasn't the only slow starter. With a three-run seventh inning, the Blue Wahoos nearly pulled off a come-from-behind victory over the Jackson Generals. Missed opportunities mounted one frame later and miscues plated two for the Generals to ultimately seal a 5-4 defeat. Here are the highlights as we go Around the Horn:

EARLY EXITS: First baseman Marquez Smith was forced out of the game in the second inning after an apparent ankle injury. The infielder beat out the tag on an infield single but appeared to come up lame after touching the bag. On the flip side, Pensacola knocked Generals starter James Gillheeney out of commission after two innings. The outing ties the southpaw's shortest of the season.

SCORELESS STREAK SNAPPED: The Wahoos ended an unfortunate streak of twenty-one consecutive scoreless innings as Yorman Rodriguez jacked a solo home run to center field in the sixth inning, his first dinger in Double-A. The hit was just Pensacola's seventh in that span, which also included eighteen strikeouts at the plate.

IN THE BIG INNING: After narrowly avoiding a pair of no-hitters last night, the Wahoos righted the ship with nine hits in the loss. Four hits came in the three-run seventh, including three knocks in a row from the bottom of the order. The stash is the most the Wahoos have scratched against opponents in June.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT: The Wahoos have seen seven of their last ten games decided by the slimmest of margins. Pensacola has played in eleven one-run games in the second half and posted a 5-6 record, bringing their season clip to an even 16-16.

The Wahoos (9-10) conclude the series tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for 7:00 PM. Fans can tweet their seats to @BlueWahoosBBall and post on the Wahoos Facebook page for a chance to win prizes on Social Media Monday.
