Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Stephen Pearson hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning to supply the only offense in a 2-0 Laredo Lemurs win over the Worcester Tornadoes at Uni-Trade Stadium on Friday night.
Dan Sausville had the tough luck loss, allowing ten base runners (six hits, four walks) and just the two runs (both earned) while striking out three in six innings of work.
Garrett Sherrill earned the win with five shutout innings, striking out four batters and giving up three hits (plus no walks). Brandon Pinckney was the first Tornadoes hitter to reach base with a single in the top of the fourth. Alex Trezza (fifth inning), Chris Torres (fifth) and Alex Nunez (sixth and eighth innings) had the only other Tornadoes hits.
Bradley Banks, Chaz Roe and Mike Benacka (who earned his first save) all kept Worcester off of the scoreboard, notching four strikeouts and retiring the visitors in order twice (including the ninth inning).
Mike Gedman and Mike Mullen each worked one scoreless inning, allowing at least a hit apiece, with each hurler inducing a double play. The Tornadoes ended the day with four double plays and 12 groundball outs as a staff.
Game two of the series is Saturday night at 7:30, as Kevin Cooper will pitch in his home state for the first time since May 23, 2010 when he lost at the Grand Prairie AirHogs as a member of the Pensacola Pelicans (formerly of the American Association).
