Jackals earn 14-5 victory
June 29, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
The Jackals hit a season-high five home runs, propelling them to a 14-5 victory over the Newark Bears.
On a steamy Friday evening at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium, the Jackals jumped all over Bears' starter Pedro Rivera, who failed to record an out in the second inning. His final line: IP, 5 H, 6 ER, BB. He drops to 1-5 this year.
Angel Berroa and Matt Cusick both hit solo home runs in the first inning. Francisco Carraballo hit his 100th career home run in the second - a two-run shot off Rivera. The Jackals would add two more in the frame to go up 6-0.
Carraballo would finish the day 4-5, a triple shy of the cycle.
The Jackals lead 8-0 after tacking on two more runs in the third. Jackals starter Steve Fox would give up three runs in the bottom of the third, the only runs he would allow. Fox's almost mundane outing of six innings pitched and three earned runs is a testament to his brilliance this season. He's now 6-1 with an ERA just over two. After the Jackals' 4-3 loss to Quebec Wednesday, all six Fox wins have followed a Jackals loss.
In the seventh, Matt Cusick hit an inside-the-park home run when center fielder Burt Reynolds whiffed on a diving attempt. With two today, Cusick has three home runs in the last three games, four this season. He hasn't hit more than four home runs in a season since 2008.
In the ninth, Bryan Sabatella's seventh home run of the season topped off the Jackals scoring at 14.
The Jackals improve to 23-16, but stay three-and-a-half games back of the Quebec Capitales as they hung on to defeat the Rockland Boulders 4-3. Newark drops to 13-28, last place in the Can-Am standings.
Tomorrow, New Jersey sends lefty Jon Kibler (4-2, 5.75 ERA) to the hill. Kibler is coming off a start in which he allowed 13 runs, five earned, in the Jackals 14-4 loss to the Grand Prairie AirHogs last week.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
