Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

A goal from Aaron Pearce with 23.7 seconds remaining in regulation Friday nudged the Waterloo Black Hawks ahead of the Des Moines Buccaneers for a 4-3 win at Young Arena.

Pearce was set up from behind the net by Tony Cameranesi after a rush up ice. The shot to the top far corner was the third unanswered goal of the period for Waterloo. The Hawks struck twice on the power play, first when Jamie Hill tipped in a blast by James Hansen at 2:52. Then A.J. Michaelson tied the score at 3-3 with 9:50 to play. Attempting to set up Max Edson from the side of the goal, the puck redirected off of a Des Moines player and trickled over the goal line.

Waterloo had caught the Buccaneers in a change for the first score of the game just 1:51 after the opening faceoff. Trevor Owens stole a puck near the blue line; the rebound opportunity from his shot lay in the crease long enough for Ryan Papa to bang it into the net. Des Moines answered 1:22 later when Eliot Grauer flipped a sharp-angled rebound chance past goalie Eamon McAdam.

The visitors took their first lead 7:09 into the second period as Mac Olson fired in a wrist shot from the deep slot. With 1:35 remaining before intermission, Des Moines made the score 3-1. Two Hawks collided, setting up a breakaway from the opposite blue line for Buccaneer veteran Kevin Irwin, capped with a shot under the crossbar.

The Hawks return to the ice for their final home game during the preseason tomorrow night against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at 7:05. All seats are just $7 for the matchup and many still remain. For more details, call the Black Hawks box office at (319) 291-7680. Season tickets are also available for the 2011-2012 campaign; individual game tickets will go on sale Monday, October 10th, the week of the first regular season home game.
