Kearney, NE - Pheonix Copley registered 39 saves as the Tri-City Storm doubled up the Omaha Lancers 2-1 Friday evening at the Viaero Event Center in Omaha's preseason debut.
Neither side was able to find the back of the net in the opening period of play despite a combined 21 shots on goal. Omaha goaltender John Keeney turned aside all 11 shots he faced in period one while Tri-City netminder answered all 10 Lancers shots he saw in the first period.
Tri-City opened the scoring a little over seven minutes into the second period when Justin Henry fired a seeing-eye snap shot from the top of the right wing faceoff circle just inside the left post. Sean O'Rourke and Joona Kunnas assisted on the even strength marker notched 7:18 into the middle stanza. The Storm doubled their lead 15:49 into the second period when a two-on-one rush resulted in Andrew Dorantes' first goal of the preseason. Tim Lappin garnered the only assist on the five-on-five goal.
Omaha grabbed its first and only goal of the evening 4:15 into the final period of play when Matthew Gaudreau lifted a wrist shot up and over the right shoulder of Copley for his first goal of the preseason. Eli Lichtenwald earned the only assist on the five-on-five even strength goal.
Copley earned the victory in goal for Tri-City with 39 saves on 40 Omaha shots. Meanwhile, Lancers netminders Keeney and Alex Lyon combined for 22 saves on 24 Storm shots. Keeney registered 15 saves while Lyon tallied seven denials.
