PCL Announces Player and Pitcher Of The Week

Published on April 26, 2010 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Left-handed hitting outfielder Brad Snyder of the Iowa Cubs and right-handed starting pitcher Radhames Liz of the Portland Beavers have been named the Pacific Coast League Player and Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Monday.

Snyder, an Ohio native and former Cleveland Indians first-round pick, batted a league-best .480 (12-for-25) with three home runs and seven runs batted in during the week of April 19-25. His 24 total bases were tops in the PCL for the week, as were his six extra-base hits. The 27-year-old is off to a quick start in 2010, with splits of .333/.375/.583 in his first 17 games. Snyder owns career-best marks of 18 home runs and 72 RBI, which he collected for the Akron Aeros of the Eastern League in 2006.

Snyder, who stands a sturdy 6-foot-3, 200 pounds, was an NCAA first team All-American at Ball State University in 2003, batting .405 with 42 extra-base hits and 20 stolen bases in 55 games for the Cardinals. He was rated the 8th, 4th, 3rd and 8th-best prospect in the Cleveland system by Baseball America entering the 2004-07 seasons.

Liz, 26, has shown flashes of brilliance in his first season in the Pacific Coast League. Not far removed from being one of the most feared strikeout pitchers in all of Minor League Baseball, Liz has struck out 22 batters in 14 innings for the Portland Beavers so far in 2010. In his only start of this past week, Liz struck out 11 batters in six innings on the road in Sacramento, allowing just one run on three hits while earning his second victory on the season.

Liz, who was a top prospect in the Baltimore Orioles system from 2005-09, joined the San Diego organization as a waiver acquisition this past November. In 28 career appearances for the Orioles, he went 6-8 with a 7.50 ERA, with 82 strikeouts and 76 walks in 110 1/3 innings pitched. The El Seybo, Dominican Republic native has a career minor league mark of 46-34 with a 3.36 ERA in 685 2/3 innings, with 782 strikeouts and 291 walks. His 14.1 strikeouts per nine innings this season ranks first among all starting pitchers in Double-A and Triple-A.
