Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
A hustle play by Daniel Nava on an inning-ending double play scored the game-winning run for the PawSox in a 2-1 victory over the Charlotte Knights on an unseasonably chilly afternoon in Pawtucket that saw a first-pitch temperature of 57 degrees.
With one down in the third inning and the bases loaded, Lars Anderson grounded a ball sharply to first base. Charlotte first baseman Jim Gallagher fielded the ball, stepped on the bag and threw on to second base where the tag was applied to Hector Luna who started on first base to begin the play. Before the tag was applied to Luna, Nava crossed the plate for the second run of the game, but Anderson was not credited with an RBI because the run scored on a double play.
Nava also scored the first run of the game as he homered on the third pitch of the game for his third homerun of the season. Nava is 8-for-14 in his last four games and is riding a five-game hitting streak overall.
Starting pitcher Kevin Millwood picked up his second win of the season in his third start for Pawtucket. He struggled early but settled in to allow just one run in five innings of work. Millwood allowed a run on four hits and a walk on 49 pitches through two innings, but he retired the final 12 batters he faced before being replaced prior to the sixth inning by Randy Williams. Millwood struck out four Charlotte Knights on the afternoon.
Williams provided two scoreless innings of relief before Rice entered the game in the eighth inning to secure the two-inning save. After running into some trouble in the eighth, it took Rice six pitches to retire three batters in the ninth inning for his second save of the season.
In the sixth, seventh and eighth innings Charlotte threatened to tie the score with a runner at third base and less than two outs. However, in each inning the bullpen was able to pitch out of the jam to preserve the one-run lead.
The lone run of the game for Charlotte came on a leadoff homerun in the second inning off the bat of Lastings Milledge. The blast hugged the foul pole down the left field line as it cleared the PawSox bullpen as well as the walkway behind the bullpen before banging off the billboards lining the perimeter of McCoy.
Pawtucket and Charlotte resume their four game series Monday night at McCoy Stadium. The start time of the game has been moved from 7:05 p.m. to 6:05 p.m. to accommodate fans interested in watching Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks. Kyle Weiland (5-4, 3.00 ERA) will take the mound for the PawSox against Joe Bisenius (NR) of the Knights.
