Gwinnett Braves Done in Again by Late-Inning Indians
June 12, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Lead: The Gwinnett Braves couldn't get their winning ways going again, dropping the second game in as many days in the series 4-3 at the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field on Sunday afternoon. The G-Braves evened up the game after an early deficit, but couldn't hold off the pesky Indians in the later innings. The G-Braves (33-30) fall into second place in the International League South division at a half-game behind Durham with the loss. The Indians (33-32) remain in third place in the IL West (all figures at press time).
It Was Over When: The G-Braves pulled into a 2-2 tie in the 3rd inning, but starter Erik Cordier relinquished it in the 5th frame after a single, a wild pitch and finally a run-scoring single by Indianapolis's John Bowker gave the Indians a lead they'd hold the rest of the way.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting RHP Cordier (1-2) went 5.1 IP, allowing 4 R/ER on 9 hits and 2 walks against 1 strikeout. Once again called up from Mississippi yesterday, LHP Rowdy Hardy went 2.0 IP of scoreless ball to finish for the G-Braves in relief.
At the plate: Leadoff man and CF Jose Constanza continued his tear atop the lineup, going 4-for-5 with a SB (17) to creep within two points of the IL lead in batting average at .356. Today was the Dominican Republic native's fifth multi-hit game in his last eight contests, including an astounding third contest with four hits in the last six. Shortstop and MLB vet Julio Lugo finished with his best game as a G-Braves, going 3-for-5 with an RBI (2). First baseman Mauro Gomez (42) and RF Stefan Gartrell (37) also chipped in an RBI apiece.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Indians starting LHP Justin Wilson (8-3) went 6.0 IP, allowing 2 R/ER and scattering 8 hits against 1 walk and 5 strikeouts in notching his IL-leading eighth win. RHP Cesar Valdez pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his fourth save.
At the Plate: Indianapolis was paced by former Atlanta prospect and 3B Andy Marte, who went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI.
On Deck: The G-Braves play game three of the final series of the current eight game road trip, taking on Indianapolis on Monday night at Victory Field at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will throw RHP Todd Redmond (4-6, 2.81) against Indians RHP Brad Lincoln (5-5, 4.34). The game can be heard on WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM.
