Indianapolis Indians News Release

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Right fielder Justin Sherrod went 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs and four RBI to help Pawtucket cruise past Indianapolis, 13-2, Tuesday night at McCoy Stadium.

The PawSox, who knock off Indianapolis for the first time in five tries this season, improve to 18-20 with the win. The Indians, who swept Pawtucket in a four-game series to open the season, fall to 23-15.

Indianapolis pushed across a run in the top of the first when CF Chris Duffy scored on LF Nate McLouth's sacrifice fly, but Pawtucket responded with two runs in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, three in the fifth and four more in the seventh.

DH Kelly Shoppach belted a two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the second to give the home team a lead it would not relinquish the rest of the night. PawSox 1B Roberto Petagine, who played for the Tribe in 1998, added a solo shot to right in the third.

Pawtucket added three in the fourth and another trio in the fifth as Sherrod took the game over. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound, right-handed slugger roped an RBI double to left field in the fourth before blasting a two-run double to the same spot in the fifth.

The advantage grew in the seventh when Indians RHP Bobby Bradley (1.0 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 4 BB, 1 SO) had trouble finding the plate.

Pawtucket RHP Tim Kester (8.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO) picked up the victory, improving to 4-1. Indianapolis RHP Justin Reid (3.0, 6 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 1 SO) was tagged with the loss, falling to 3-3.

LHP Mike Johnston (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO) turned in the Tribe's best pitching performance of the evening, registering five outs by just facing four batters.

Shoppach collected two hits, four runs and an RBI for Pawtucket, while CF Chip Ambres tallied two hits, three runs and an RBI. Petagine and catcher Shawn Wooten also scored two runs apiece for the winners. 1B Brad Eldred paced the Indianapolis offense by going 2-for-4 on the night.

The Indians and PawSox return to McCoy Stadium Wednesday morning at 11:05 a.m., for game two of the four-game set. The contest will be carried by ESPN-950 AM as Howard Kellman and Robert Portnoy have the call. Wednesday's pre-game show begins at 10:45 a.m.
