New Jersey Jackals News Release

Augusta, NJ - Sussex Skyhawks starter Mike Vicaro took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, but New Jersey Jackals southpaw Isaac Pavlik's complete-game shutout carried the Jackals to a 2-0 win over Sussex on Thursday night in the opener of a four-game series at Skylands Park. The win ended New Jersey's three-game losing streak.

In a game that featured a pair of no-hitters into the bottom of the fifth inning, Sussex starter Mike Vicaro allowed his and first and only base hit with one out in the top of the eighth to Jackals rookie shortstop Dan Betteridge. After the Betteridge single, Vicaro departed and reliever Matt Salvato allowed a single to right fielder Kevin Clark before center fielder Adam Godwin followed with an RBI base hit through the right side to score Betteridge with the game's first run. Clark scored a batter later when second baseman Travis Jones grounded out to give the Jackals a 2-0 lead.

Sussex threatened in the bottom of the ninth when left fielder Kraig Binick and shortstop Chase Fontaine reached on back-to-back one-out singles and advanced to second and third, but with two outs, Pavlik struck out league RBI leader Caleb Stewart to secure his eighth career complete game in his six-year tenure with the Jackals.

Pavlik retired the first 12 batters he faced before Stewart laced a leadoff double to left center in the fifth inning. But Pavlik later retired Stewart at second in a rundown before escaping the jam. Pavlik allowed leadoff base hits in the sixth and seventh as well, but escaped unscathed both times. Meanwhile, New Jersey loaded the bases in the sixth on a pair of walks and a hit batter, but Vicaro was able to leave the bases full and preserve the joint shutout.

Pavlik (5-3) struck out a season-high seven batters while notching New Jersey's first complete game of the season. Vicaro (3-2) took the loss despite yielding just one run on one hit in 7 1/3 innings with two walks and two strikeouts.

In six outings against Sussex this season including two starts, Pavlik has turned in 20 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just 10 hits and striking out 14 batters. Over his past two starts, Pavlik has allowed just one run in 15 2/3 frames with 11 strikeouts and one free pass.

Fontaine was the only player to collect multiple hits in a 2-for-4 night at the plate. Third baseman Abraham Nunez added a late single for the Jackals while Sussex third baseman Nick Giarraputo picked up a double. The 2 hours, 24 minute affair was played in front of a crowd of 3,688 on fireworks night at Skylands Park.

The Jackals (1-3 second half, 20-30 overall) and Skyhawks (1-3, 26-24) continue their four-game series on Friday at 7:05 p.m. at Skylands Park when New Jersey sends rookie left-hander Luis Fernandez (1-0, 5.61) to the mound against Sussex right-hander Tim Stringer (3-3, 5.67).
