Sussex Skyhawks News Release

Augusta, N.J. - July 22, 2010 - For seven and one-third innings, it looked as though the 3,688 Sussex Skyhawks fans in attendance at Thursday night's game at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park might witness the first no-hitter in the stadium's history. But the New Jersey Jackals had other ideas, and the two runs they scored in the top of the eighth inning off of starter Mike Vicaro and reliever Matt Salvato proved to be enough for a 2-0 victory and their first win of the second half.

Vicaro recorded the first 22 outs of the game for Sussex without allowing a hit, working around two errors, two walks and a hit batsman before New Jersey shortstop Dan Betteridge singled up the middle with one out in the eighth. Manager Ed Ott elected to remove Vicaro from the game at that stage after he had thrown over 100 pitches, handing the ball over to Salvato to finish the inning. New Jersey outfielders Kevin Clark and Adam Godwin each singled off Salvato, and Godwin's hit brought home Betteridge for the first run of the game. Second baseman Travis Jones then grounded out to shortstop to bring home Clark before first baseman Jabe Bergeron grounded out to end the half-inning.

The Skyhawks (1-3, 26-24) were held hitless by the Jackals (1-3, 20-30) as well until designated hitter Caleb Stewart doubled to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Sussex would put the leadoff man on in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings as well, but the home team was unable to push across a run against New Jersey starter Isaac Pavlik. The Skyhawks had runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Stewart struck out swinging to end the game. Pavlik finished the night with a complete game shutout, marking the first time this season that a Jackals starter has lasted more than seven innings in a game.

The Skyhawks and Jackals meet again Friday night at 7:05 p.m. at CenturyLink Field at Skylands Park for the second game of a four-game set. Friday's probable starters are Tim Stringer (3-3, 5.67) for Sussex and Luis Fernandez (1-0, 5.61) for New Jersey. Call the box office at 973-300-1000 ext. 21 to reserve your tickets.
