Week in Review

Tuesday, December 29th Calgary Hitmen 4 Regina Pats 3

The Pats road woes continued with a 4-3 loss to the Calgary Hitmen at the Pengrowth Saddledome. The Hitmen held a 3-1 lead after the first, but Matt Strueby picked up a power play goal in the second to cut it to a one goal lead heading into the final period. A Tyler Fiddler shorthanded goal made it 4-2 Calgary before Strueby's second of the night with the Pats net empty cut it to one again. The Pats were inches away from tying the game, but a goal post and a Michal Snyder glove sealed the win for Calgary.

Thursday, December 31st Kootenay Ice 8 Regina Pats 4

The Pats put a 2009 to forget behind them with an 8-4 loss to the Kootenay Ice on New Year's Eve at the Cranbrook Rec Plex. Scoring in the loss for the Pats were Craig Orfino, Cass Mappin, Hampus Gustafsson and Jordan Weal. It was a tough debut for the newly acquired Brett Martyniuk, as he let in 8 of 30 shots.

Saturday, January 2nd Regina Pats 4 Lethbridge Hurricanes 3

The Pats 9 game losing streak ended with a 4-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes. Carter Ashton scored twice, while Cass Mappin and Garrett Mitchell added singles. Brett Martyniuk stopped 27 shots for his first win as a member of the Regina Pats. Brandon Davidson had a pair of assists in his return to the Pats line-up

Since We've been gone:

It will be almost a full month since the Regina Pats have played a home game, and when they take on the Moose Jaw this Friday night, folks will need a program. Here's how things have changed:

#23 Cass Mappin - Trade with Vancouver (Tendler/picks)

#4 Mitch Spooner - Trade with Vancouver (Tendler/picks)

#25 Carter Ashton- Trade with Lethbridge (Hood/Balog/picks)

Goaltending 911!:

With the injuries to both Dawson Guhle and Damien Ketlo, the Pats had to make an emergency trade with the Tri-City Americans on Thursday. The Pats acquired 18 year old Brett Martyniuk for futures. Martyniuk will be starting for the blue and white for the next upcoming games. Backing him up will be Yorkton native, Joel Danyluk. He has seen action with the Prince George Cougars, but has spent the past two seasons with the La Ronge Ice Wolves of the SJHL.

Back to Back Gold??:

Colten Teubert and Jordan Eberle will have a chance to win back to back gold medals on Tuesday night as their Team Canada will take on the Americans. Teubert registered his first point of the tournament in the 6-1 semi-final win over the Swiss., he is also third on the team with a +7. Jordan Eberle is tied for second in tournament scoring with 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points.

Answering the "Bell" @ U-17's

Team Pacific and Team West didn't enjoy a very successful World U-17 Hockey Challenge in Timmins, Ontario. Team Pacific finished 5th, but Myles Bell was fantastic with 4 goals and an assist in 5 games, finishing third in team scoring. Tyler Borstmayer and his Team West finished 8th at the tournament with Borstmayer registering an assist in 5 games.

November to Remember, December to Forget:

After a slow start to the season, the Pats had a fantastic November with a 9-4-1-0 mark to get them in the hunt for a home playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. December has seen the Pats played 9 of 12 on the road with a record of 1-11.

Top Prospects:

Jordan Weal was named to play for Team Cherry at the upcoming Home Hardware CHL Top Prospects game on Wednesday, January 20th in Windsor, Ontario.

The Central Division:

Before the Pats embarked on their first five game road trip through the Central Division, they had a 5-and-1 record, but after dropping all 5 games on their first trip and now 3 of 4 on their second trip, they now sit a three games under 500 against their 5 Alberta and 1 B.C. foe.

Streaking:

*Garrett Mitchell has 5 points (2g 3a) in his last 4 games and has set single season highs in goals, assists and points.

*Jordan Eberle 25 points in his last 10 games (13g 12a)

Milestones:

*Jordan Eberle is the active Pat career leader in points with 261. He is also the current active Pat career leader in goals (133), assists (128), points (257), game winning goals (27), power play goals (53) and shorthanded markers (13).

*Brett Leffler is 1 goal away from 70 goals and 10 points away from 150 in his WHL career and is now 5th on the Pats all-time games played list with 280 (passing Perry Johnson and Mark Janssens) and is just 2 back of Matt Hubbauer for 4th and 7 back of David McDonald for third all-time.

*Colten Teubert is 6 points away from 100 for his WHL career.

Around the office:

Sportsman's Dinner is postponed:

With the World Juniors, the Trans-Canada clash, as well as the Motley Crue concert, the Regina Pats Sportsman's dinner has been postponed for later this season. It was originally scheduled for January 28th, but is tentatively scheduled now for sometime in March.

Goals for Kids:

With the Pats scoring 11 times this week gives them a season total of 149; the Prairie Mobile Communications "goals for kids" fund is now up to $2235. $15 from every goal scored will be donated to the Ranch Ehrlo Outdoor Hockey League, courtesy of Prairie Mobile Communications.

In the Community:

The Pat players will make an appearance this Thursday at Pilot Butte School for the Project 1st Goal anti-drug program.

The Highway one rivalry continues and it will also mark the return of 4 Pats players to the line-up that has been involved in international play. Jordan Eberle and Colten Teubert will be back from the World Juniors, while Myles Bell and Tyler Borstmayer return from the World UP-17 Hockey Challenge

Saturday, January 9th Medicine Hat @ Regina

The Pats will face the Canada's World Junior head coach Willie Desjardins and the Tigers for the final time this season. The Pats won their lone home game on November 4th, while the Tigers won both of their home games in December.
