Long Island Ducks News Release
(Central Islip, N.Y., August 31, 2009) - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 9-6 on Monday night before a past-capacity crowd of 6,014 at Citibank Park.
The Ducks jumped on the board during their first trip to the plate. Jose Herrera's RBI groundout scored Juan Francia, who led off the inning with a single. However, the Patriots tied it up in the next half an inning as Mike Rodriguez' RBI single plated Jason Belcher and the game was knotted at one.
Long Island struck for two runs and regained the lead in last of the second off Patriots' starter Brian Adams (12-6). Four hits, including RBI singles by John Pachot and Alex Prieto did the damage. Single runs in the third and fourth innings by the Pats tied the contest up at three against Long Island starter Jake Dittler. Belcher's second RBI single of the night cut the Patriots' deficit to 3-2 in the third and Rodriguez' second consecutive base hit evened the score.
The Flock captured the lead back in the home half of the fifth as two singles and George Lombard's RBI groundout helped push the Ducks' lead to 5-3.
In the top of the sixth, Somerset grabbed their first lead of the contest. Five hits and two walks, including a bases loaded free pass issued by Ducks' reliever Hansel Izquierdo (0-3) gave the Pats a 7-5 advantage. Two insurance runs in top of the eighth by the Pats pushed their lead to 9-5 to help seal the game.
Two hits and two walks helped the Ducks rally in the bottom of the ninth to make the score 9-6, but Ryan Basner came in with the bases loaded and nailed down his sixth save of the season.
Adams earned the win, tossing six innings, allowing five runs and 11 hits, with two punch-outs. Izquierdo was saddled with the loss as he allowed two runs and three hits, while Basner earned the save.
