Patriots outhit Ducks for 9-6 win

CENTRAL ISLIP , NY- The Somerset Patriots defeated the Long Island Ducks 9-6 in front of 6,014 fans at Citibank Park on Monday evening.

Trailing by two runs, Somerset rallied for a nine batter, four run top of the sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Second baseman Teuris Olivares ripped a lead off single to left and advanced to third on a single to right by first baseman Joe Burke. After a strike out and caught stealing, rightfielder Mike Rodriguez drew a walk and then leftfielder Elliott Ayala lined a two out RBI single to left. Centerfielder Sean Smith followed with a single up the middle to load the bases. Shortstop Anthony Granato walked to force in a run and then Ayala scampered home on a wild pitch. Third baseman Jeff Nettles capped the scoring with an RBI single to left that drove in Smith.

Somerset added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to extend their lead to 9-5. Ayala lined a one out single to right, advanced to second when Smith followed with a walk and scored on an RBI bloop single to right center by Granato. Nettles then drove in Smith with an RBI ground out to third.

The Ducks scored their final run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it 9-6 when designated hitter George Lombard drew a bases loaded walk. Long Island loaded the bases on a two out infield single to third by second baseman Juan Francia, a single to right by first baseman Ray Navarrete and a walk by rightfielder Jose Herrera.

Long Island struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning to take a 1-0 lead when Francia hit a lead off single up the middle, stole second, advanced to third on a bloop single to left by Navarrete and scored on an RBI fielder's choice ground ball to second off the bat of Herrera.

Somerset answered with a run in the top of the second inning to tie the game at 1-1 when Olivares reached on a one out fielder's choice to shortstop, moved into scoring position on a single to left by designated hitter Jon Nelson and scored on a two out RBI single to left by Rodriguez.

The Ducks responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Centerfielder Johnny Hernandez blooped a lead off single to right and moved to second on a single to left by leftfielder Estee Harris. After a sacrifice bunt, catcher John Pachot hit a one out RBI single to left that plated Hernandez and shortstop Alex Prieto followed with an RBI bloop single to right that scored Harris.

The Patriots added a run in the top of the third inning to cut the Ducks lead to 3-2 when Granato hit a one out infield single to the left side, stole second and scored on a two out RBI single to center by catcher Jason Belcher.

Somerset tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the fourth inning when Nelson ripped a double into left center and came around to score on a one out RBI single to right by Rodriguez.

Long Island plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead. Prieto led off with a single to left and moved to second on a bunt single up the first base line by Francia. Herrera then hit a one out RBI single to right that scored Prieto and Lombard drove in Francia with an RBI fielder's choice ground ball to second.

Patriots' starter Brian Adams (12-6) picked up the win, allowing five runs on eleven hits while striking out two and walking none in six innings of work. Ducks' reliever Hansel Izquierdo (0-3) suffered the loss, allowing two runs on three hits while walking one without recording an out. Patriots' reliever Ryan Basner recorded the final out for his sixth save of the season.

With the win the Patriots improved to 30-19 in the second half and 73-46 overall while the Ducks dropped to 24-26 and 61-59 overall.
