Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Regina, SK. - The Brandon Wheat Kings came close to turning the tables on the Regina Pats Saturday night.
One night after falling victim to a Pats comeback at Westoba Place - losing in overtime - the Wheat Kings rallied from a 3-0 second period deficit, only to lose 4-3 in a shootout.
Trailing 3-0 the Wheat Kings got on the board late in the second when Ty Thorpe, who signed with the Western Hockey League club on Friday, banged in a rebound for his first goal in his first game in the league.
In the third, Baron Thompson pulled Brandon to within one before Lynden McCallum evened the score.
Regina's Sergie Alkhimov scored the only goal in the shootout, after a scoreless overtime.
Alkhimov, Scott Mahovlich and Garrett Wright scored goals for the Pats, who improved to 3-1-0-0 in pre-season play.
The Wheat Kings, who received a 31-save performance from netminder Dylan Myskiw, fell to 0-0-1-1.
Brandon coach David Anning spoke to the Brandon Sun's Perry Bergson following the game.
"I thought in the first period we were trying to find our legs and get comfortable, and I thought as the second period went on we certainly changed the momentum of the game and got going a little bit," Anning said. "I really liked our last six to 10 minutes of the second period, and again, I thought our third period was very strong. We generated a lot of shots in the second half of the hockey game and we had lots of guys getting to the hard areas and getting to the net. It was nice
