Game Recap
First Period
The Hitmen didn't waste any time getting on the board as the tallied only 1:31 into the contest. Teagan Sacher poke checked the puck away from Zane Jones in front, but the puck bounced high off Jones' chest and into the back of the Pats' goal. Regina had a couple of chances on the powerplay, but couldn't take advantage. The Hitmen would capitalize on their lone opportunity of the period, though, as Brady Brassart tipped a Brooks Macek point shot behind Sacher to give the Hitmen a 2-0 lead through twenty minutes. The Hitmen held advantage on the shot clock as well, leading 8-5 in that regard after the first.
Second Period
The second frame was a chance for the Pats to get back in the game and they did put on a push in the early stages of the period. They would send eight shots towards Mack Shields, but the rookie goaltender turned all of them away to send the Pats to the third still scoreless. The Hitmen did add to their lead late in the period. Teagan Sacher played the puck to Carson Samoridny, Hitmen rookie Pavlo Padakin stole it and after a couple of whacks, was able to put it in the back of the Pats' net to leave the Hitmen up 3-0 heading to the third period. Both teams registered eight shots on goal to leave the count 16-13 in favour of Calgary.
Third Period
The Pats found themselves in some early penalty trouble in the Third period and it would cost them as Zane Jones batted in his second of the game out of mid-air. The Blue and White survived another penalty kill and found themselves on an advantage of their own. The puck found its way to Morgan Klimchuk and he popped the water bottle to get the Pats on the board. Things continued to get interesting when Chandler Stephenson opened up Lane Scheidl in front to get the Pats within two. The Hitmen didn't let that stand as Victor Rask snapped a pass towards the net and former Pat Colten Mayor tipped the puck into the goal to restore the three goal lead at 5-2. That score would hold up as the Pats dropped their first game of their three game swing through Alberta.
The Pats return to action Tuesday night in Red Deer against the Rebels. You can catch that game on 620 CKRM starting at 7:35 p.m. CST with the Press Box Sports Bar Pre-Game Show.
