Somerset Patriots News Release

Bridgewater, NJ - The Three-Time Atlantic League Champion Somerset Patriots have announced the signing of former Tampa Bay Devil Rays infielder Jared Sandberg.

Sandberg has played in 196 Major League games with the Devil Rays in parts of three different seasons. Sandberg has 139 hits, 38 doubles, two triples, 25 home runs, and 92 RBI in 630 Major League at bats.

Sandberg also has five seasons of Triple-A experience for Tampa Bay and most recently spent time during the 2005 season with Portland, the Double-A affiliate for the Boston Red Sox. In 2005, Sandberg hit 18 home runs and drove in 71 runs in 130 games played for Portland.

Sandberg has a minor league career .251 batting average with 804 hits, 184 doubles, 12 triples, 131 home runs, and 544 RBI in 887 games.

"We are looking for Jared to help add a little more spark to our offense. Our pitching has been strong since we started, but we've been struggling getting runs on the board. Jared has the ability to provide us with a little more power and run production," said Sparky Lyle, Manager of the Somerset Patriots Baseball Club.

Sandberg is the nephew of Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, the Chicago Cubs second baseman from 1982-1994 and 1996-1997. Ryne Sandberg was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005 for his outstanding 16-year Major League career that was highlighted by ten All-Star selections, the 1984 National League MVP Award, and nine Gold Gloves

Sandberg has been activated for Wednesday night's game against the Newark Bears.

The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Thursday, June 8th for a 6:05 pm double-header against the Newark Bears. The game includes Sparky Lyle Figurines for the first 1,500 fans in attendance courtesy of ImClone Systems Inc. Thursday's game is also NASCAR Night with GMAC driver Brian Vickers scheduled to appear to meet fans. Great seats are still available by calling (908) 252-0700, by stopping by the Patriots Ticket Office located at the ballpark, or on-line at www.somersetpatriots.com.
