Patriots select Boumtje-Boumtje in first round of 2004 NBDL draft

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C., November 5—The Fayetteville Patriots selected Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje with their first pick in the 2004-05 National Basketball Development League (NBDL) draft. A 7-0, 227 pound center from Washington, DC, Boumtje-Boumtje, participated in NBA training camp with the San Antonio Spurs in 2004. He played for the Portland Trail Blazers in the NBA from 2001-02 to 2003-04 where he appeared in a total of 44 games in three seasons, scoring a total of 43 points, grabbing 57 rebounds, and blocking 16 shots.

Boumtje-Boumtje completed four years at Georgetown University where he finished his career as the fourth all-time leading shot blocker in school history with 255, ranking behind Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, and Dikembe Mutombo. He ranks tenth in total rebounds (71) and 15th in rebounding average (7.0 rpg). He earned Third Team All-Big East honors as a junior and finished in the top 35 in the nation in blocked shots his final three seasons.

"Boumtje-Boumtje is a savvy NBA veteran that knows how to play the game in the post and will be able to help with some of the younger guys we will have on the team," head coach Mike Brown said. "He gives us toughness inside with his size, strength and shot blocking ability."

Jon Smith, a 6-8, 220 pound 2003 graduate of Bowie State was selected by the Patriots in the second round. Smith finished his career at Bowie State after spending his first three seasons at Virginia Tech. In his only season, he helped the Bulldogs to a 30-5 record and a Final Four finish in the NCAA Division II Tournament. As a senior he averaged 14.0 points and 7.3 rebounds and received All-CIAA honors.

The Patriots preseason training camp begins Sunday, Nov. 7. Each team will make their first cuts down to 12 players by Nov. 11 followed by NBDL exhibition games scheduled to begin Nov. 16. The Patriots will face the Roanoke Dazzle in their exhibition contest, Nov. 16, in Fayetteville.

"I was very excited about our picks," head coach Mike Brown said. "We had a successful draft and are looking forward to getting started."

Additional 2004 Patriot draft selections include: Romuald Augustin (Bryant), Ousmane Cisse (St. Jude High School), Chris Brooks (Florida Southern), Greg Davis (Troy State), Sean Finn (Dayton) Antwan Jones (Georgetown, KY), Brandon Bender (Robert Morris) and Quannas White (Oklahoma).

The Patriots tips off their 2004-05 season on Nov. 20 at home against the defending NBDL Champion Asheville Altitude. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The NBDL, the NBA's minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Twenty-eight (28) players have been callup up to the NBA on 39 separate occasions. Nine former NBDL coaches, five athletic trainers, 11 referees and 29 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.
