November 5, 2004 - NBA G League (G League)
Columbus Riverdragons News Release
COLUMBUS, GA-The Columbus Riverdragons have announced the results of the 2004 National Basketball Development League Draft. With the #1 pick overall, the Riverdragons selected guard Ricky Minard, from Morehead State, who participated in NBA training camp with the Sacramento Kings in 2004.
The Riverdragons other selections include 6-11 center Jason Lawson (7th pick, 2nd round), 6-10 power forward and returning Riverdragon from 2002-03 Kitwana Rhymer (13th pick, 3rd round), and 6-3 guard Aubrey Reese, originally from Auburn, Al., who starred at Auburn High School and Murray State.
"We are very please with the results from this year's draft", said Riverdragons Head Coach Jeff Malone. "We wanted a scorer and Ricky's the guy we wanted. I think a lot of people will be surprised by Aubrey and Seth. Plus, I can't wait to see Kitwana Rhymer and Jason Lawson go head-to-head in practice. They're two bangers inside who will prove to be effective at blocking shots and rebounding."
Minard was selected by the Kings in the second round (#48 pick overall) of the 2004 NBA Draft. The 6-4, guard appeared in four preseason contests with Sacramento, averaging 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Minard was originally an early entry candidate for the 2003 NBA Draft before withdrawing his name from consideration.
An AP Honorable Mention All-American his junior and senior seasons, Minard finished his four-year college career at Morehead State with career averages of 20.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg, and 3.7 apg, while shooting 49% from the field, 37% from three-point range, and 80% from the foul line. Minard was a three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection and was named OVC Player of the Year as a senior. The 22 year-old from Mansfield, Ohio ranks as Morehead State's all-time leading scorer (and fourth in OVC history) with 2,381 career points and is second all-time in assists with 417 distributions.
"Tonight's draft was a solid start to our fourth season of play," said Team President J. Barry McMullin. "Placing an extremely competitive basketball team on the floor is vital to our success. Coach Malone and Coach Murray have worked hard to bring in the best of the best. We're anxious to get started!"
The 10 players selected by the Columbus Riverdragons join the team's two allocated players (Adam Harrington, other allocation player to be named later), one player picked from local tryouts (Zach Marbury), and four returners from last season (Erron Maxey, Jeff Myers, Reed Rawlings, and Derrick Zimmerman).
