Flight take forward Joe Shipp in round one

HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Flight selected small forward Joe Ship with their first pick (fourth overall) in 2004 National Basketball Development League draft.

Shipp, 6-5, 220 pounds from the University of California, was a 2003 AP Honorable Mention All-American as a senior, and finished his career as the school?s third all-time leading scorer with 1,666 points.

Shipp played for Verviers-Pepinster in Belgium in 2003-04, appearing in 16 games and averaging 12.6 points and 5.4 rebounds.

?We?re thrilled to get Joe with the fourth pick,? Flight head coach Ralph Lewis said. ?He?s a versatile player who put up big numbers in the PAC 10, and has some good professional experience playing overseas.?

With their second-round pick, the Flight chose forward Austin Nichols from Humboldt State. Nicholls, 6-6, 200 pounds, was a 2004 Basketball Times Division II First Team All-American as a senior, and finished as the school?s all-time leading scorer with 2,502 points.

The Flight?s other eight draft picks were: Mengke Bateer (China), Edward Scott (Clemson), Bernard King (Texas A&M), Randy Orr (Georgia Perimeter College), Brandon Hawkins (San Jose State), Charles Gaines (Southern Mississippi), Darrell Tucker (San Francisco), and Tarise Bryson (Illinois State).

The Flight open training camp on Sunday at the Southeast Family YMCA in Huntsville with a morning session from 10 a.m. to noon, followed by a second session from 6-8 p.m. After an exhibition game against the Asheville Altitude on November 17, the Flight will open the season on November 20 at Columbus. The Flight?s home opener is Saturday, November 27 against Columbus.
