Florida Flame News Release

GREENVILLE, S.C., November 5 – Forward Darius Rice has been allocated to the Florida Flame of the NBA's National Basketball Development League, according to an announcement by NBDL director of basketball operations Chris Alpert. Rice will report to training camp in Ft. Myers on Saturday.

Rice, a 6-10, 222-pound rookie from the University of Miami, was in NBA training camp with the New Jersey Nets after completing his Hurricanes career last season. He is the second player allocated to Florida, joining guard Terrence Woods of Florida A&M.

Each NBDL team is allocated two players. Up to 17 players will report to training camps in each market, and a minimum of one allocation player is guaranteed a spot on each team's final roster of 10 players.

A four-year starter at Miami, Rice played in 116 games, starting 113. Over his college career he averaged 16.1 points and 5.7 rebounds, while shooting .403 (631-1,564) from the floor. He was only the second player in school history to lead the team in scoring four consecutive seasons and his 1,865 total points is fourth all-time at Miami.

The nephew of NFL receiving great Jerry Rice, he is a native of Jackson, Miss., where he played his prep basketball at Lanier High School and was a McDonald's All-America selection.

The NBDL, the NBA's minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.) and Asheville Altitude (N.C.).

The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Twenty-eight (28) players have earned a Gatorade Callup to the NBA on 39 separate occasions. Nine former NBDL coaches, five athletic trainers, 11 referees and 29 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.

Designed to help grow the sport of basketball both domestically and internationally, the league also offers fun, family entertainment at affordable prices. The NBDL is a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 30 teams and is a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions.
