Roanoke Dazzle News Release
Roanoke, Va., (Apr. 9) ? A lay-in by Kenny Satterfield with 0.3 remaining lifted the Fayetteville Patriots to a thrilling 111-110 NBDL victory over the Roanoke Dazzle.
The "Win and We?re In" playoff mantra of the Dazzle will have to wait until Saturday. Fayetteville (21-24) now leads Roanoke by one game with one left in the battle for the fourth and final NBDL playoff spot. The Dazzle will have to defeat visiting Charleston tomorrow night and then rely on Asheville to defeat Fayetteville to earn a spot in the NBDL playoffs. Despite tonight?s loss Roanoke (20-25) wins the season series with the Patriots 5 ? 4.
After falling behind by as many as seven in the first quarter the Dazzle righted their ship and lead 63-56 at the half, then things got interesting. Roanoke already playing without Terrence Shannon, who may have sustained a broken ankle midway through the second quarter, lost All-NBDL first team performer Josh Asselin who was called for his second technical foul of the night and ejected with 8:42 remaining in the third. The Dazzle led at that point 68-58. Despite being shorthanded Roanoke led by thirteen at the end of the third.
Behind a 15-point fourth quarter effort from veteran Junie Sanders, the Patriots began to creep back into the game. A Sanders dunk with 1:46 left made the score 106-105 Roanoke. Marque Perry responded for the Dazzle with a 15-foot jump shot that gave the Dazzle a three point lead with 1:28 remaining. Back-to-back baskets by Cedric Henderson gave Fayetteville the lead at 109-108.
Fayetteville head coach Jeff Capel admired his team?s effort. "There?s no quit in this team. It?s the first time we?ve won in this building and it couldn?t have come at a better time."
Roanoke didn?t quit either as Mike King put back a Justin Hamilton miss with 5.8 seconds left to stake Roanoke to a 110-109 lead. Fayetteville called time out and advanced the ball to mid-court paving the way for Satterfield?s heroics. Satterfield and Sanders led the Patriots with 24 points each.
The loss, Roanoke?s ninth in a row, didn?t come from a lack of effort according to head coach Kent Davison. "We didn?t win. But for those kids to go out there and lay their heart on the line, I?m proud of them." The Dazzle was paced by Marque Perry and George Williams who contributed 20 points each.
Fayetteville travels to Asheville to take on the Altitude Saturday night. The Dazzle closes out the 2003-04 season at home with the Charleston Lowgators on Saturday.
