Patriots fall short in 8-7 loss to Bears

Bridgewater, NJ - The Newark Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 8-7 before 4,526 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Tuesday evening.

The Bears took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Right fielder Jose Herrera doubled and scored on first baseman Jeremy Todd's RBI double.

Somerset answered with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Designated hitter Ray Navarrete singled, stole second base, and scored on left fielder Pat Boran's RBI single to tie the game 1-1.

Newark regained the lead with five runs in the top of the fourth inning. Herrera and Todd drew walks and catcher Abraham Ayala followed with an RBI single. Third baseman Jose Olmeda then drove in two runs with a double. Second baseman Jack Santora drove in two runs with a single and shortstop Jerson Perez's RBI triple closed out the scoring and gave the Bears a 6-1 lead.

The Patriots added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by first baseman Todd Betts (9) to make the score 6-2.

Newark extended the lead to 8-2 in the top of the sixth inning. Ayala reached on a wild pitch and scored on a two run home run by Olmeda (7).

Somerset cut the lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Escandon doubled and scored on an RBI double by Nettles. Shortstop Kevin Nicholson followed with an RBI double and then stole third base. Betts drove home Nicholson with an RBI groundout to make the score 8-5.

The Patriots rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Escandon drew a walk and advanced to third on a double by Nettles. Escandon scored on an RBI groundout by Nicholson and right fielder Ryan Radmanovich's sacrifice fly cut the lead to a run at 8-7.

Newark starter Carlos Castillo (3-2) picked up the win, allowing five earned runs on nine hits and six strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Patriots starter Scott Sobkowiak (6-3) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on four hits and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. Bears reliever Jake Brooks earned his 11th save of the season for Newark with a perfect ninth inning pitched.

The 2005 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Wednesday, June 29th with a 7:05 pm game against the Newark Bears. Wednesday 's game includes Fireworks presented by The Provident Bank.
