Patriots drop game one to Bears, second game called due to rain

Bridgewater, NJ - The Newark Bears shutout the Somerset Patriots 1-0 in seven innings on Thursday evening before 4,849 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark.

Newark catcher Jeremy Booth hit a solo home run (2) in the third inning for the decisive run.

Bears starting pitcher David Shepard (2-5) pitched six shutout innings for the win. He gave up four hits and struck out one batter. Somerset starting pitcher Jason Olson (3-3) took the loss, allowing an earned run on three hits, while striking out four batters. Newark reliever Travis Wade earned his first save of the season, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Patriots designated hitter Mike Lockwood went two-for-three to lead Somerset, while Booth went two-for-three with an RBI and run scored for Newark.

The second game was called due to the rainy conditions. The game is tentatively scheduled as a double header in Newark next week.

The 2006 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Friday night with a 7:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Friday's game includes a Post Game Fireworks Extravaganza presented by Investors Savings Bank.
