Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - June 8, 2006 - The Newark Bears announced today they have signed right-handed pitcher Blas Cedeno to a contract for the 2006 season. He has been activated and will be in uniform for the doubleheader between the Bears and the Somerset Patriots at Commerce Bank Ballpark, Thursday evening beginning at 6:05 pm.
Cedeno is in his 15th professional season after signing as non-drafted free agent with the Detroit Tigers in 1990. During his career he has played in the Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates organizations, between the double-A and triple-A levels. While pitching for the Camden Riversharks in 2004, the veteran of over 400 games appeared in 22 games posting a 1-2 record with 2 saves and a 3.89 ERA.
"We are excited to add a player like Blas Cedeno to the team this season," said Bears' General Manager John Brandt. "The veteran leadership he brings to the Bears on and off the field will help the team come back from the slow start to the 2006 season."
After Thursday's doubleheader against the Patriots, the Bears will play a four-game series, including a doubleheader on Saturday against the Atlantic City Surf at Bernie Robbins Stadium. After the series in Atlantic City, the Bears open up a ten-game home stand with four games against the Patriots.
