Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - June 8, 2006 - Newark Bears catcher Jeremy Booth hit his second home run of the season in the top of the third inning and it was all starter David Shepard (2-5) would need as the Bears defeated the Somerset Patriots 1-0 in game one of the doubleheader at Commerce Bank Ballpark Thursday evening. Game two has been postponed due to inclement weather. No make-up date has been announced.
Shepard earned the victory after allowing only four hits in six-plus scoreless innings, striking out one batter, while Patriots starter Jason Olsen (3-3) took the loss after surrendering one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings. Travis Wade picked up his first save of the season, after pitching a scoreless seventh inning, including starting a critical 1-6-3 double play to the first batter he faced, Patriots third baseman Jeff Nettles.
Booth led the way for the Bears at the plate going 2-for-3 with a home run, single, run scored and RBI.
The Bears begin a four-game series against the Atlantic City Surf at Bernie Robbins Stadium, Friday evening. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1:35 pm, with game one as the make-up game for the rain out on Thursday, June 1 at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium.
