Somerset Patriots News Release
Bridgewater, NJ - The Somerset Patriots defeated the Newark Bears 7-1 at TD Bank Ballpark on Thursday evening.
The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by center fielder Charlton Jimerson (1).
The Patriots answered with four runs in the bottom of the first inning for a 4-1 lead. Shortstop Anthony Granato singled, right fielder Noah Hall singled, and third baseman Jeff Nettles drew a walk to load the bases. Designated hitter Josh Pressley then grounded out to plate Granato to tie up the game. Second baseman Matt Hagen then hit an RBI single to bring home Hall. Left fielder Jon Nelson drove in Nettles with an RBI double and catcher Jason Belcher hit a sacrifice fly to score Hagen.
Somerset added a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. First baseman Joe Burke walked and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Hall for a 5-1 lead.
The Patriots scored in the bottom of the seventh inning. Nettles singled and scored on an RBI double by Pressley for a 6-1 lead.
Somerset extended the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning. Center fielder Mike Rodriguez singled and later scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Granato to make the score 7-1.
Patriots starter Kip Bouknight (1-1) picked up the win, allowing an earned run on two hits and six strikeouts in six innings pitched. Newark starter Francisco Castillo (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing three earned runs on two hits in 0.1 innings pitched.
The 2009 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue on the road until Friday, May 8th when the Patriots return to TD Bank Ballpark for a 7:05 pm game against the York Revolution.
